It’s been a busy day of maintenance at McMullen! Two of our classrooms, along with an area off the kitchen, experienced extreme temperatures and high humidity due to trouble with our steam heat. The boiler system was temporarily shut down so our maintenance team could replace and repair leaking lines and gaskets. They also addressed two sinks that were backing up and a leaking classroom ceiling!
We are so grateful to our custodial, maintenance and teaching staff for repeatedly taking action to address concerns in a way that minimizes the impact on our students.

The Task Force has reviewed and considered a variety of funding options, including an income tax levy. Because an income tax levy is dependent on those living in the district, it is less secure and not recommended by financial advisors due to its instability. If someone making $150,000/yr. moves out of the district or loses a job, the funding generated is lost. Additionally, the interest rate is higher for this type of funding source, and the term is shorter compared to a property tax, which would increase the annual commitment (23 years is the longest term for an income tax).
For example, funding a $52 million bond issue in our community through a 50/50 split of income tax and property tax would require a 1.25% income tax over a 23 year term and 4.8 mil property tax over a 37 year term. The income tax would generate $26,000,000 toward the project and would cost an estimated $625/year per $50,000 of income. The property tax would then generate $26,000,000 as well, and cost property owners $168/year per $100,000 of market value. A person making $50,000/year and living in a $100,000 home in our community would pay an estimated total of $793/year.
Funding the same issue through property taxes, would require a 10.10 mil property tax levy and would cost $353.50/year per $100,000 of market value.

The PI levy, originally passed by voters in 2013 for a period of five years for 1.5 mills, was renewed by the community in March 2024 for another five-year period. This levy generates $297,000 per year for the district and will be an important part of maintaining our current facilities over the next five years.
Should the community vote to approve the current bond issue, the Board of Education would recommend to not renew the levy once it expires. If the bond issue is not passed and we are unable to develop a plan to address facilities, voters would likely see a permanent improvement levy on the ballot for additional millage exceeding the current 1.5 mills in order to support ongoing maintenance costs of our facilities. Currently, over the last four years, the district has spent an average of $509,218.54 annually on maintenance expenses.

It wouldn't be Redbird football season without the Beat Hillsdale Community Bonfire! Thank you to everyone who joined us and celebrated the fall season with Redbird spirit.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Back to School Bash! 🎉 We had an amazing time celebrating the start of the school year with our Redbirds. Thank you to the many community resource organizations that volunteered their time to share valuable information with our school community.
In 2023, our district was awarded the Stronger Connections Grant, making events like this bash and the spring resource fair possible. This grant focuses on supporting health, safety, student wellness, and mental health needs. Community involvement and engagement, such as the resource fair and Back-to-School Bash, are a key part of this initiative! We're excited to turn this into a yearly tradition, providing families with critical resources and kicking off the school year with fun and community spirit!

Join us TONIGHT for the Beat Hillsdale Community Bonfire! The event will kick off at 8 p.m. in the parking lot between the high school and the football stadium. We hope to see you there! Go Birds!
