While the idea seems simple, financing bonds for school projects is more complex. School bond interest rates are typically lower than personal loan or mortgage rates due to tax exemptions and the district’s strong credit rating. The original rate was estimated at 5%, but today’s rate might be closer to 4.5%.
The projected interest of $52.8 million was based on $55.5 million, excluding the district's $2 million contribution. With the current bond issue of $53.5 million, the interest at 5% would be around $50.8 million, and at 4.5%, it would drop to $45.7 million. Lower interest rates over the 37-year repayment period could benefit taxpayers.
However, interest rates fluctuate, and final rates will depend on when the bonds are sold. The district can also refinance if rates improve. Much depends on the timeline set by the OFCC and the outcome of the November bond issue.
