Thank you to everyone who came out to the Back to School Bash! 🎉 We had an amazing time celebrating the start of the school year with our Redbirds. Thank you to the many community resource organizations that volunteered their time to share valuable information with our school community. In 2023, our district was awarded the Stronger Connections Grant, making events like this bash and the spring resource fair possible. This grant focuses on supporting health, safety, student wellness, and mental health needs. Community involvement and engagement, such as the resource fair and Back-to-School Bash, are a key part of this initiative! We're excited to turn this into a yearly tradition, providing families with critical resources and kicking off the school year with fun and community spirit!

It's an exciting day at LP! We just got our new book vending machine! Students will have the opportunity to earn golden coins throughout the year that can be used to pick out a new book to keep. Special thanks to all that helped to make this a reality for our K-3 students, including the LP Schools Foundation and the McMullen Parents Association! The LP Foundation provided Superintendent Allerding a grant to make this project happen, and the McMullen Parent Association helped with purchasing books to stock out vending machine.

What is a mill? A mill is a unit used to measure property tax rates. Specifically, one mill is equal to $1 of tax for every $1,000 of assessed property value. This means that when you see a tax rate expressed in mills on your tax bill, it signifies the amount of tax due per $1,000 of the property's assessed value. The concept of mills helps determine the property tax amount owed based on the property's value.

This afternoon the National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for Ashland County until tomorrow at 8 p.m. as temperatures reached above 90 degrees today and are predicted to rise to even higher temperatures tomorrow. As a result, students will be released two hours early tomorrow, August 27, 2024. A heat advisory, as defined by the National Weather Service, means that “temperatures of at least 100°F* or heat index values of at least 105°F* are expected generally within the next 24 hours (National Weather Service).” It is recommended that any strenuous outdoor activity is postponed, and those most vulnerable to the conditions, including children, use extra caution when outdoors. We do not take the decision to release students early lightly. Time spent inside the classroom is crucial for the learning and growth of our Redbirds. However, this afternoon, district administrators were monitoring the temperatures of our approximately 83 classrooms. 67 of those classrooms are over 80 degrees, and 14 of those classrooms are over 85 degrees. Our hottest classroom today was 87.7 degrees at McMullen Elementary. We encourage students to wear cooling clothing that aligns with our district’s dress code and bring an insulated water bottle. Thank you for your collaboration in keeping our students and staff safe during these extreme temperatures!

It’s time for a bus safety reminder for drivers! If a bus is stopped on a street with fewer than four lanes, all traffic proceeding in either direction must stop. And remember, you must not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or until the school bus driver signals to proceed. Help us keep our Redbirds safe and always stop for school buses!

The start of the new school year is an opportunity to remind our students and community about the importance of school bus safety! Students, remember to always wait in your designated place for pick-up, avoid the danger zone, and listen to your bus driver’s instructions. Here is to another great year!

On Monday, we welcomed back our Redbird staff! During convocation, Superintendent Allerding spoke with staff about their positive impact and the opportunity they have each day to make a difference in our students' lives—in every role. A few of our Redbirds, ranging from elementary to high school, joined Mrs. Allerding to present staff with a small token and daily reminder of the difference they make in our community.
